Camping...Mini Van Style

Indian Paintbrush. My favorite flower.

Last weekend Gareth and I went on a quest to find a place within driving distance that was not raining. The only place on the weather map that seemed dry-ish was along the David Thompson Highway, so we got in the car and drove 3 hours northeast. And what a beautiful spot it was! We found a great free camping spot along the North Saskatchewan River to test out our newly camperized mini-van set-up. The first day we attempted to hike Coral Ridge, but due to a lack of time, we stopped at a viewpoint 1/3 of the way up and then walked back along Coral Canyon and the Cline River Gorge.

That night after dinner, we struggled to stay awake until it got dark. Even with the curtains pulled in the van, it was too light to sleep until after 11pm. And now the days start getting shorter...

Day two of the trip we hiked to Wild Horse Pass along Wild Horse Creek. It was a steep hike through a very recent prescribed burn. The trees were scorched black, the roots fully exposed.

It was strangely beautiful and at times eerily still. At the pass we got an incredible view of the White Goat Wilderness and Landslide Lake, which was still fully frozen. Remind me, why do I live in the Canadian Rockies? I am so ready for summer. There has yet to be a day where shorts and a t-shirt would be an acceptable clothing choice and I am getting antsy to wear summer dresses and sandals. Any day now summer...
